SharePoint - Top Benefits
- SharePoint connects people and information all in one location. SharePoint organizes information from the lists you keep on scraps of paper to large files (documents, spreadsheets, presentations, etc.) and provides several methods for people to communicate directly in the SharePoint environment.
- SharePoint is a robust content management system. It has enhanced capabilities to store, manage, and secure documentation.
- An easy to navigate user interface and tight integration with Microsoft Office products, especially Outlook, make SharePoint very user-friendly. It's actually fun to use.
Windows SharePoint Services (and the SharePoint 2007 Product Family)
- Windows SharePoint Services (WSS 3.0) - a free service that can be downloaded from Microsoft's web site and runs on top of Windows Server 2003. The download may be free, but it requires the correct network setup to run. It's not just a matter of downloading and you're up and running. There is a LOT of configuration to be done once you have the correct hardware and software. (Just for reference, the setup instructions for this course are 10+ pages.)
- Microsoft SharePoint Server (MOSS 2007) - a server that extends the functionality of WSS, providing enterprise-wide functionality including document management, search, workflows, portals, and personalized sites . SharePoint Server is expensive (roughly 40K for one server plus per person licensing fees at about $75 per).
- SharePoint Designer (SPD) - web design tools specifically geared towards creating SharePoint sites. Designer allows an experienced web designer to use familiar tools and to customize of site.
